The history
of Islam in Magetan was inseparable from the existence of At-Taqwa Mosque, a unique mosque made of teak wood. The
mosque is believed to be built in 1840 by followers of Prince Diponegoro who
escape from Dutch army. This
mosque also saved a number of ancient handwritten Koran, but unfortunately the
condition has been badly damaged.
At-Taqwa mosque is located in Godhegan, Taman Arum Village, Parang District, Magetan, East Java. The mosque is believed to be founded in 1840 AD; nearly 70 percent of the building is made of teak wood including the roof. According to the history, this mosque was founded by Imam Nawawi, one of the bodyguards of Prince Diponegero who fled to the Lawu Mountain.
Despite of its old age, almost two centuries, it is seen still standing strong and useable. Every day, At-Taqwa mosque is always full with people. Apart from being one of the locations religious tourism, the mosque is also commonly used by people for materials research.
This mosque has other uniqueness; there is some ancient Koran, which was made around 1897 and written by hand. The cover was made from animal skins. Unfortunately, this precious heritage seems to be abandoned. Its condition is already damaged due to age. Beside the mosque, you will find a pool. In ancient times such as the pool is usually used by the students and pilgrims of the mosque for bathing and ablutions.
