Unique Painting, Calligraphy from Waste Materials




A painter of Islamic calligraphy in Kudus, Central Java, has a unique idea in making the work of calligraphic paintings. By utilizing unused junk to embellish calligraphic paintings, he made unique painting.

He is Mohammed Assiry Jasiri who has this unique idea. According to Assiry, utilization of waste materials in calligraphy painting started in the 2000s.

Assiry said that the garbage that is used aims to facilitate the process of creating a work of art that is usually required in calligraphy painting. Therefore, he tries utilizing some of the materials that become useless junk, like former dos paper, plastic bags, dry leaves, rope fibers and some other useless material.

Some waste materials, he said, could create unique textures that beautify calligraphy painting. Although there is some waste materials, he added, his work remains highly valued.

Utilization of waste materials is also more efficient and as a place to make campaign for recycling trash into something useful.

Thanks to this work, he admitted, some time ago, he managed to sell works of calligraphy painting up to Rp 10 million per painting. While the price of the most inexpensive calligraphy painting, he said, about $ 1 million.

The price of each painting calligraphic works, adapted to the size and degree of difficulty in the process. By utilizing a number of waste materials, he added, he also wants to help people get to know him because it is rare to know calligraphy paintings that utilize waste materials all this time.

To sell his creativity, he acknowledges, he still face obstacles given by the community of Kudus city since they are not too interested. Nonetheless, he added, a number of attempts were made, one of them through performance art exhibition of calligraphy.

"The result was good enough for those who are interested in painting," he said.

The existence of the internet also helps him targeting almost all levels of society. He use it as a market to sell his products and the result is quite good. To popularize the art of Islamic calligraphy, he also tried to sell his products at a restaurant in Jalan Lingkar UKM Kudus that has art nuances with a blend of natural scenery.
